An ‘OK’ Prompt
Prompt:
“Solve a math problem for me.”
- This is too vague and doesn’t specify the type of problem or level of complexity.
A ‘Better’ Prompt
Prompt:
“Solve this math problem: 45 + 36 × 2.”
- This gives a specific problem to solve but doesn’t include instructions about steps or explanations.
An ‘Ideal’ Prompt
Prompt:
“Solve this math problem: 45 + 36 × 2. Explain the steps clearly, using the order of operations (PEMDAS). Show your work so that a 7th-grade student can follow along and understand how to solve similar problems.”
- This provides a clear problem, asks for step-by-step instructions, specifies the audience (7th graders), and ensures the explanation is easy to follow.

Remember: ChatGPT doesn’t always give the exact same answer, even if you use the same prompt. This is because it’s designed to come up with different responses, making it more creative and flexible.
